Air Conditioning
Ventilation is simply the removal of ‘stale’ indoor air from a building and its replacement with fresh outside air. Its most obvious function is to provide a continuous supply of oxygen – we all need air to breathe, after all – but it has other advantages, too.
It removes general products of respiration (CO2) and occupation, and replaces air that has become ‘flat’ (positively ionised, like the air prior to a storm) due to the effects of high levels of electronic and electrical equipment found in a typical office environment. Ventilation also may be essential in extracting specific contaminants such as water vapour, heat and smells from cooking or gases and vapours from industrial processes. The rate at which fresh air is needed, and the number of air changes required will depend on the specific application.
